- Today, we’re honored to have on the podcast one of the most celebrated figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Léo Vieira. A two-time ADCC champion and a multiple-time Brazilian national champion, Léo has earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic and innovative competitors in the sport.
Beyond his success on the mats, he’s also known for his incredible work as a coach and mentor. As the co-founder of Checkmat, a powerhouse BJJ team that has produced numerous world champions, Léo has been instrumental in shaping the careers of some of the best athletes in the sport today.
Léo goes through how he started jiu jitsu when he was 8 years old. The difference between jiu jitsu back then and today. We get to hear about times where he defended his Dojo from random people on the streets where his Professor decided the rules when he was a teenager and tons of more interesting aspects of jiu jitsu from the early 80s.
We essentially get a history lesson of BJJ and about so many influential people that has helped shape the sport to what it is today, from Jacare to Fabio Gurgel and so many more name drops. How Léo and his brother Rico started one of the biggest team in the world today, Checkmat. Why they started Checkmat, his vision and how jiu jitsu slowly became a sport.
We get Léo's opinion about the latest CJI, different rulesets and how we potentially could get a universal ruleset.
We ask him about the diffrence between gi and no-gi jiu jitsu and what he prefers, as well as what he thinks is growing more right now.
Léo also gives us an exclusive scoop on a new competition he is going to arrange called, the Super Cup with a modified ruleset that is super interesting and will go live with their first tournament in November in California.
He also tells us that there is a BIG possibility that we will see the much anticipated match between Mica Galvao vs Tainan Dalpra in a not so far away future.
Of course, as always we will establish the "Dragonfish of the week" together with Léo and potentially create a hat for this (Léo's idea).
